Bhai Baldeep Singh is a 13th-generation Sikh vocalist who also plays the taus, jori, and pakhawaj. He abandoned a career in aviation and aircraft design to pursue music full-time, eventually mastering several different approaches to Gurbani Kirtan (Sikh spiritual music). He has performed and lectured widely, as well as composing poetry, working on archival projects, and designing four new bows for the taus. His Anad Foundation seeks to preserve the sound of rare Indian instruments. Hear more of Bhai here:

Gurbani Kirtan (or Shabad Kirtan) refers to the rich tradition of Sikh devotional music. Central to many strands of the religion, it centres around singing sacred songs to God, often featuring flowing melodies and driving, upbeat tabla rhythms. The music is rooted in Hindustani classical forms, drawing from raga frameworks and looking strongly to older styles such as dhrupad. Sikh scriptures describe the specifics of 31 ragas and 17 talas, and many saints have set poetry to music - notably Guru Granth Sahib. Modern approaches have incorporated instruments such as guitar, drums, and keyboards, but the core of vocal-tabla-harmonium is still on display at gurdwaras across the world.
Recorded at Darbar Festival 2006, at Leicester’s Peepul Centre:
-Bhai Baldeep Singh (vocals)
-Ravi Shankar Upadhyay (pakhawaj)
-Kirpal Singh Panesar (pakhawaj)
